Mike Webb Exhibition Launches at The Corn Hall

On Saturday 4th January, an event was held to launch a new Mike Webb exhibition at The Corn Hall Gallery which runs until January 8th.

The exhibition, Mere Quacks and Other Animals, features the artwork of popular local cartoonist and watercolourist, Mike Webb. Mike is most well-known for his regular Diss Express cartoon series Mere Quacks which first appeared in the newspaper in 1974. The exhibition displays a variety of Mike’s ink and watercolour cartoons which are as humorous as they are topical. In recent years, Mike has used his watercolour prowess to depict the countryside in precise detail. These joyful pastoral scenes are an ode to the beauty of our county and are displayed alongside his familiar cartoons.

As part of the exhibition Mike presents a piece that attempts to break Banksy’s £18.5 million sale record for a self-destructing artwork. Entitled The Bone’s A Balloon, ‘Webbsy’s’ painting depicts a cartoon dog gazing at a hovering bone-shaped balloon. What is most remarkable about the artwork, however, is how the canvas has been partially ‘shredded’ by its own frame. The blind auction, held at The Corn Hall, attracted a flurry of bids but the final sale price ultimately fell short of the record!

Mere Quacks and Other Animals runs until 8th January 2021. Opening times: 10:00 – 16:00 Monday – Saturday (Closed between Xmas and New Year reopens on Jan 4th)
