A Midsummer Night’s Dream
"The course of true love never did run smooth. "Set in an enchanted forest with warring fairies, sparring lovers and a group of enthusiastic amateur actors who are putting on a play, this most magical and hilarious play is the perfect entertainment.
Demetrius and Lysander love Hermia. Hermia loves Lysander, but her father is about to force her to marry Demetrius – much to her horror. But no one loves poor Helena, though her heart belongs to Demetrius.
When Hermia and Lysander elope into the forest, all four young lovers get caught in the crossfire of a battle between Oberon and Titania, the king and queen of the fairy world. Puck, the fairy king's mischievous sidekick, wreaks havoc with a magical love potion, not only between the young lovers but also amongst the "rude mechanicals", who have come to the forest to rehearse their play in secret. Bottom, their leading man, magically sprouts a donkey's head and becomes involved in a romantic tryst with the queen of the fairies herself.
Following the success of recent summer tours of "As You Like It" and "Twelfth Night", RoughCast's lively and fast-moving production is set on a sultry summer's evening in Greece, redolent of summer holidays on Mediterranean islands but also with a flavour of ancient Greece and mythological magic.
