In Between (15)

Venue: The Corn Hall

Directed by Maysaloun Hamoud, Israel/France, 2016, 1hr 43mins, subtitled

With Mouna Hawa, Sana Jammelieh, Shaden Kanboura

Three Palestinian women living in an apartment in Tel Aviv try to find a balance between traditional and modern culture. Hamoud's clever, nuanced screenplay offers a critique of traditional, patriarchal Palestinian society, threatened by modernity, feminine power, and the court of public opinion. A film that is full of life, taking us to places that most of us in the west knew nothing about.

**** In Between has been rapturously received, with Hamoud receiving the Women in Motion Young Talents award at this year’s Cannes festival. Isabelle Huppert, who selected her for the award, declared that “the free spirited and joyful women [Hamoud] portrays… are true heroines of our time”. That’s a sentiment with which I wholeheartedly concur.
