The Viceroy’s House (12A)
Directed by Gurinder Chadha, UK/India, 2017, 106 mins With Michael Gambon, Gillian Anderson, Hugh Bonneville
Charged by King George VI to oversee the peaceful transition of power from Britain to the India it had ruled for 300 years, Lord Mountbatten (Bonneville) and his wife Edwina (Anderson) struggle to manage both the hundreds of servants under their care and the conflicts that emerge over the birth of a newly independent nation. Set in the vast and magnificent Viceroy’s House in Delhi, the drama escalates as Hindu, Sikh and Muslim differences threaten to overwhelm them.
