This unflinching chronicle of the childhood, adolescence and burgeoning adulthood of a young, African-American, gay man growing up in a rough neighbourhood of Miami makes for challenging viewing, but it’s certainly worth the investment. The issues surrounded poverty, homosexuality, masculinity, and Blackness are woven together with subtlety and sensitivity, and, while offering no easy answers, does so with a simple, painful, outstanding beauty.
