Women of Troy – a Corn Hall steward’s review

On Friday night I continued in my quest to see as much local drama as I can, so I went to Diss Park to watch the open air production of Women of Troy by Euripides (415BC). Open Space Company are a group of top local actors who tackle many of the major plays with enormous success. We are so lucky to have such high quality rep on our doorstep.

If you add in the stunning setting for a play using the backdrop of the town of Diss seen across the Mere combined with the wide variety of picnics consumed then you have a totally memorable evening’s entertainment.

In this play it is the women who have the strongest role (as given in the title) and they all were equally powerful holding the stage through very long passages of quite complex text. I particularly admired the ‘Greek Chorus’ of five women whose role could be insignificant but here brought forward the strength of women to survive in adversity and support each other when in extremis.

Can this be related to the current situation in the Ukraine, well only time will tell but the images that are coming from that country do not bode well for the fate of those who survive but are not free.
