Start with Art! #NationalLottery25

This image represents an special moment in a child’s life, shared with his grandparents, at our recent ‘Start with Art!’ event.

Here at the Corn Hall in Diss the support from Arts Council England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund has meant that we have been able to offer ‘Start with Art!’ as a pilot in our Outreach programme.

Our aim is to create an atmosphere where art is easily accessible to young children and to allow them to share it with family and friends –  not out of reach and high brow.  We hope to inspire those involved to be inquisitive about what they see and enable them to explore for themselves. The 75 children who came to our ‘Start with Art!’ sessions last week involved themselves completely. Together with their grown ups, they not only searched for objects and effects that had influenced the artist, Norman Ackroyd, but also really got stuck into in the art related activities provided by Rachel Baker,  our splendid creative play practitioner.

“Lovely introduction to a new artist and interactive activity within the gallery environment” Comment by a parent of children aged 1-3 and 9+.

“I am really pleased that we attended this event today. Not only did my child learn about this artist, so did I” comment by the parent of a 4-6 year old.

We may only be in a small rural market town in South Norfolk, but we aim to make art accessible to all – whether the work is by our many good local artists, or national names like Bridget Riley (November 2019) and Lucian Freud (January 2020).

‘Start With Art!’ is a great opportunity to start with art! #NationalLottery25
